Woodledge Swim Instructor Success Profile
Prerequisites and Function:
Current Lifeguard Certification at the time of start date. Current CPR, AED and First Aid certification via American Red Cross.
Please indicate whether or not you have a WSI or similar swim program certification. *All swim instructors hired by Woodledge Club will complete comprehensive swim program certification in line with Swim Lesson Programming Director criteria.
The function of the swim instructor is to develop a child’s water safety skills and swimming ability. All swim instructors should always follow the swim lesson plan that has been communicated by the Swim Lesson Programming Director taking into account the individual needs of each child in the lesson. That being said, all Swim instructors must be certified lifeguards and in the event of an emergency, respond appropriately and in a timely manner.
Reporting Structure:
All Swim instructors have a matrix style reporting structure. This means that they report to the Operations Manager in regards to all aspects of lifeguarding and report to the Director of Swim Lesson Programming in regards to all aspects of swim lesson instruction or Coaching. The Operations Manager is an open position, the Head Swim Coach and Swim Lesson Programming Director is Stevie Hoyt.
As a member of the Woodledge Staff, the swim instructor must
Promote Woodledge Swim Lessons and encourage children to participate.
Adhere to and enforce all club rules and bylaws.
Enforce guest policies for the use of the facilities by nonmembers.
Answer questions/concerns in a timely and respectful manner and direct any questions you are uncomfortable answering to the Swim Lesson Programming Director for further support.
Complete biweekly swim assessment, communicating status of swimmer to the associated adult.
Scheduling and Work Hours:
Swim Lessons are held from June 16th through the last week in July, monday-friday.
Swim Lesson run for two hours in the morning and may run for one hour in the afternoon/evening – Swim Lesson Hours are TBD for 2026.
A Swim Lesson instructor may also be a Woodledge Lifeguard (part time or full time) which would increase the total number of hours available to them.
Full Time employees typically work 20-25 hours a week while part time employees typically work 12-18 hours a week.
All swim instructors hired by Woodledge Club will be provided swim program training led by Swim Lesson Programming Director, Stevie Hoyt. This will occur before the Woodledge Season begins. Those attending will receive compensation for their time. If you are unable to attend this training due to a prior commitment, you must work with Stevie to learn necessary course work.
Compensation:
New lifeguards will be compensated at Minimum wage. Those who have previously been lifeguards or lifeguards at Woodledge in the past may be eligible for higher pay based on a variety of factors.
Full Time and Part Time Hourly employees are eligible for August Awards. Members vote for the lifeguards who exhibit exemplary leadership and safety qualities throughout the summer. The two guards with the most votes will receive $500 each.
Woodledge provides weekly snacks to lifeguards and swim instructors. These snacks are stored in the first aid closet between the two bathrooms. Snacks will be replenished weekly.
Swim Instructors and Lifeguards receive a complimentary membership for themselves.
Terms of Employment and Employee Code of Conduct:
This is a seasonal position, the term of employment is from May 1st through September 1st 2025.
Ensure that your teammates are attentive, respectful and responsible, and communicate. Voice any concerns to the Operations Manager if you do not feel comfortable communicating with your peers.
Must arrive 10 minutes early for each shift worked, compensation will be provided for that time.
Act appropriately with and interact with adult members and their children. Children view Swim instructors and coaches as role models. Appropriate behavior is required.
Do not whip towels, hit or put hands on one another or members. Children view Swim instructors and coaches as role models. Appropriate behavior is required.
Act with maturity and professionalism.
Act politely and courteously.
Not smoking on pool grounds as it is prohibited.
Refrain from loud and offensive conversations. This includes foul language used at any time while on club grounds.
Get to know the families, foster a family friendly fun pool environment.
Follow the instructions of the operations manager and in cases when the operations manager and Swim Lesson Programming Director or Swim Coaches.
Find an approved substitute If there is a conflict with the work schedule.
Cell phones should only be used when on break or in the case of emergencies.
Seven or more days requested off during the employment period must be approved by the Club President.
The following process has been implemented to ensure adherence to the staff code of conduct:
First offense will result in a verbal warning by the Operations Manager.
Second offense will be a written warning
Third offense will be a final written warning
Fourth offense will result in termination.
Please note that each warning may also result in an employee being sent home for that shift.
Consuming or being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and/or using inappropriate language or putting hands on one anyone on club property are grounds for immediate dismissal.
You may cease your employment at any time and for any reason by notifying the Club Manager in writing that you wish to end your employment. Please give at least one week’s notice. You are an employee at will. The club may also terminate your employment at any time for any reason by the discretion of the Board of Directors and/or Operations Manager.
